If you are someone that is unemployed due to the economic crisis we are going through at moment, then there must be a financial fall for you. Having a place to live and having food to eat everyday may be depended on a close friend or a relative just so that you can survive. Sure things could get worse. But you still have to think about health insurance and wonder if it exists for those individuals that are unemployed.
Medical attention is something that everyone needs to have if something health related comes up, and also so is the health insurance so that the treatment can be covered without worrying about going into debt for the rest of your life. So what is someone to do about getting affordable health insurance when they are unemployed? Because no matter where you are in the United States we all know that unemployment checks are not that great.
One option would be through COBRA. This would be perfect for someone that just needs short time medical insurance for them and their family. Do not expect for COBRA health insurance to take care of you forever though. And you will still have to pay a premium, which also many people that are unemployed will not be able to afford. If you can get accepted by the COBRA health insurance program you may be able to receive the same health benefits from that of your previous employer for up to 18 months.
You could also look around for some type of short term health insurance if you are not able to be accepted by the COBRA program. Short term health insurance plans can range from 6 months to 12 months. As of now there are not many other well known health insurance programs that are out there for the unemployed, but they are there and many of them are state specific such as the Blue Cross of Florida.
The best advice would be to get some type of short term health insurance plan, if you have no money what so ever you will go into debt with medical bills, but you will receive emergency health care as hospitals cannot refuse, but this is not something that you should live by. When you receive that medical bill it is your duty to pay it back in full, to pay a medical bill in full without any type of health insurance will cost you a lot of money and definitely put you in debt.
